Teens: How To Reach Them with Tech and Social Media

If teachers know anything, they know that you have to reach a teen where the teen can be reached. Usually that’s mobile devices.

A non-profit organization leader offers advice on outreach for teens on mobile devices.

A mobile device is one of a teen’s most prized possessions acting as a “life line” for most, Hirabayashi said. Moreover, teens are averse to advertising. So be sure that it’s a conversation you’re starting. For example, rather than just asking teens to opt-in, pose a question, offer information, and invite them to take part.

Conversation is important. As more people get used to learning and engaging in the social media space, direct marketing and advertising techniques will not work. Teens avoid that messaging, because they can see right through it.

Educators can leverage a teen’s need for conversation and engagement by tuning their teaching style to this medium.

Here are some reasons why educators need to be tuned into social media as a learning methodology.

Eighty-six percent of students note that they use more technology outside the classroom than inside.  Nearly all surveyed students (94 percent) said they use technology to complete homework assignments, but just 46 percent of faculty said they regularly assign homework that requires the use of technology.

More districts are turning to digital content as an essential part of their classroom instruction. Eleven percent of districts are using digital content as an alternative to traditional print textbooks, and 62 percent of IT staff said their districts are considering using digital content.  Nearly three-quarters of faculty noted that digital content is essential because of its ability to provide faculty and students with better access to updated information.
